Christ Univesity Bangalore was started in 1969 under the management of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), a Catholic Congression founded by St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara in 1831. The university was identified as an Institution with Potential for Excellence in 2006. The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) declared the institute as "Deemed To Be University" in 2008.

The university has five campuses which are Bengaluru Central Campus, Bannerghatta Road Campus, Kengeri Campus, Delhi-NCR Campus, and Pune-Lavasa Campus. It was one of the first institutions in India to be accredited by the NAAC in 1998. Admission to the university is done via online mode for various programs in bachelor, master, and doctoral levels in humanities, social science, science, economics, management, engineering, education, and law fields.
